Feminist February: Intersectional Feminist Leadership
Event description
Join the conversation as GEN VIC and a panel of sector and community leaders discuss how intersectional feminist
leadership looks like in practice, the ways it transforms communities and organisations and challenges hierarchies
of power and control.
This event is part of GEN VIC’s Feminist February series which deep dives into a range of contemporary feminist topics
and aims to stretch and challenge the thinking of our communities.
This discussion features:
Tanja Kovac - Moderator
Tanja is the CEO of Gender Equity Victoria, the peak organisation for women, gender equality and the prevention of
gendered violence in Victoria. She is a Senior Fellow, Gender Equality at progressive think tank Per Capita and a
writer and director at her own communications consultancy, Kovac & Co. She has managed several small non-profit
organisations in the faith, women’s and human rights sectors, but her research, policy, writing and advocacy
passion is gender equality.
Hana Assafiri
Hana has dedicated her professional and private life to removing barriers that prevent women from living prosperous
lives. By opening her first restaurant in 1998, the popular Moroccan Soup Bar in North Fitzroy — an institution for
many Victorians — Hana has provided employment opportunities for marginalised members of the community. Hana is
passionate about the need for greater intercultural understanding by creating opportunities through respectful
cross-cultural relations.
Renay Baker-Mulholland
Renay is a proud Birpi / Daingatti yinarr (woman) . She is disabled, lives with chronic pain and fatigue as well as
psychosocial illnesses. A firm believer in the social model of disability, staunch intersectional feminist, and
abolitionist, Renay aims to defy the colonial boundaries imposed on First Nations people. She is a storyteller,
having a yarn is a fundamental part of her culture and though her work spans a variety of mediums, directing it
all is her desire to share her experience from a Blak, disabled, feminist perspective.
Tasneem Chopra.
A Cross-cultural Consultant, Tasneem addresses issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion across organisational
leadership, including intersectionality within government, corporate, arts and community sectors. For her efforts
she was recently appointed the inaugural Ambassador for Women of Colour, Australia - and in 2020, awarded an OAM.
Tasneem is a Board Director for The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), as well as a Strategic advisor
for Fire Rescue Victoria and the Collingwood Football Expert Panel on Anti-Racism.
