Ferrie Lecture 2025 with Dr Scott R. Swain
Event description
Christ College invites you to attend our Annual Eliza Ferrie Public Lecture.
This year, Dr. Scott R. Swain will be delivering a lecture on the topic, "Not a man but an ox: the names of God in Numbers 23".
In Holy Scripture, the high God stoops down to speak to us in our humble language. In doing so, he puts our humble language to a holy use: that of revealing his holy name. Numbers 23:13-26 provides an instructive example of the way God reveals himself in human words. In this passage, God simultaneously declares that he is “not man” (v. 19) and that he is “like the horns of the wild ox” (v. 22). Understanding how these two claims relate to each other will help us better understand the nature of the God who stands behind his promises and merits our eternal praise.
Dr. Swain is President and James Woodrow Hassell Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. He has served on the RTS faculty since 2006. He is also the Vice President of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS).
