But photojournalism in the modern newsroom has a unique set of challenges.

This Edit event will discuss those challenges, starting with how to find your way in the job, to wrestling with AI, issues of verification, how to cover big events and what it takes to land that unforgettable image.

    With:

Ellen Smith, Assistant Picture Editor, Guardian Australia.
Ellen is an experienced photographer and multimedia producer, who has worked as a staff photographer and Deputy Picture Editor at News Corp Australia.

Michael Willson, Head of Photography and Chief Photographer, AFL.
Michael’s work is well-known to sports fans around the country. A multiple-award winner, his image of AFLW’s Tayla Harris won the Gold Quill in 2020.

    Penny Stephens, freelancer.
Penny worked for The Age for 20 years before becoming a freelancer, who shoots a mixture of media, corporate and personal work. She freelances for The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and AAP.

The Edit is the MPC’s event series for young and early career journalists.
