Description

Finding Your Bearings: Data Protection and Data Sovereignty

Community organisations collect and hold a significant amount of information about volunteers, staff, clients, donors, and community members. Understanding how to protect that information and use it responsibly is becoming increasingly important.

This practical online session will explore the fundamentals of data protection and data sovereignty, helping community organisations understand their responsibilities in how they collect, store, share, and manage information.

Topics are expected to include:

  • Privacy and data protection obligations

  • Good practice for collecting and storing information

  • Managing volunteer, client, and supporter data safely

  • Data sovereignty and why it matters

  • Risks associated with digital systems and online platforms

  • Practical steps organisations can take to strengthen their data practices

Whether you're involved in volunteer coordination, administration, governance, management, or service delivery, this session will provide a useful foundation.

This session is part of Volunteer Wellington's Community Law training series, designed to make quality legal education more accessible to community organisations across the Wellington region.
