The Asian Australian Project are excited to announce our upcoming ‘Fireside Chat: Beyond the Newsroom’ Asian Australians in Journalism.

News and media has played a critical role for Asian Australians, as not only a conduit for diasporic communities, but also as a means of telling of the diverse stories that make up the greater Australian landscape.

Join us on Tuesday 7th of February, 7pm - 9pm AEDT as we chat with our incredible line up of journalist and media professionals that are leading the way in shaping the narratives beyond the barriers of the newsroom.

Alicia Vrajlal - Refinery 29 Australia, Draw Your Box

Alicia Vrajlal is a Sydney-based entertainment, news and lifestyle journalist and the proud daughter of Fijian Indian immigrants. She's the former Editor at HuffPost Australia and now Senior Culture Editor at Refinery29 Australia. She made her start in the media industry in 2011 when she founded an entertainment blog. Passionate about elevating underrepresented voices through her journalism, she went on to launch the website Draw Your Box, which in 2023 will focus on South Asian-related stories in Australia and beyond. 


Alice Matthews - ABC News

Alice Matthews is a Walkley award winning journalist from Canberra. Formerly a triple j Breakfast newsreader, she has also presented Hack, co-hosted The Feed on SBS and panelled discussions on Insight. She now works at ABC Radio Canberra as the presenter of Sunday Brunch and occasional anchor of the 7pm News on ABC TV. Alice has collaborated on several international United Nations projects covering protecting journalists’ confidential sources, fake news and disinformation and spent five years as a volunteer biographer for palliative care patients at St Vincent’s Hospital.  


Iskhandar Razak - ABC News

Born in Singapore, from a mixed, Chinese-Malay, Indian and Indonesian background Iskhandar Razak is a reporter, presenter and producer in the Melbourne Newsroom. He has covered a range of issues and topics in Victoria, and internationally for television, radio and online. Previously he worked at the ABC's Asia Pacific News Centre, as well as in Darwin, Adelaide, Port Pirie and Port Augusta.

Rhea L Nath - Momentum Media, 'Young Journalist of the Year' 2022 NSW Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards

Named the 2022 'Young Journalist of the Year' at the NSW Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards, Rhea is a Sydney-based writer and editor who upon arriving in Australia as an international student in 2019 has built her journalistic practice exploring stories surrounding diversity and representation, sustainability, and international student issues. Rhea is currently a journalist with Momentum Media, she has previously worked as a business reporter with Dynamic Business and as a journalist in the multicultural media with Indian Link Media Group.
