A Rite of Passage Celebration for Girls Entering Womanhood (First Moon Circle)
Event description
A First Moon Circle is a coming of age ceremony for children ages 9 to 12. It is a celebration of a young person's menarche (first period) and the powerful transition into womanhood.
Whether they have started their period or not, this circle provides a nurturing space for children to feel proud, gain knowledge, become empowered, and learn how to support themselves through this transition physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
The First Moon Circle is divided into two parts:
Part 1: Children's Gathering (2 hours)
This dedicated time for children fosters a fun, supportive atmosphere where they can connect with peers, make new friends, and learn accurate information about the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual changes associated with approaching and experiencing menarche (first period).
During this session, children will explore:
- Puberty and periods: Understanding the physical and emotional changes, and what to expect.
- The female body: Exploring hormones and the reproductive system.
- Cycle awareness: Learning about the four phases of the menstrual cycle and how energy levels, strengths, and needs fluctuate throughout the month.
- Self-care: Discovering practical ways to nurture themselves during their cycle, including the importance of rest and managing pre-menstrual emotions.
- Period products: Exploring body and earth friendly options and having the opportunity to interact with them.
This safe space allows children to ask any questions they may have, no matter how awkward or curious, in a supportive and confidential environment.
Part 2: Celebration with Loved Ones (1 hour)
Mothers, grandmothers, caregivers or significant adults are invited to join the children for a celebration. The children share what they have learned, and the elders offer positive guidance and blessings for their journey into womanhood.
This gathering aims to:
- Model open communication: Demonstrate that discussing periods and puberty is healthy and normal.
- Empower caregivers: Provide an opportunity to affirm the children's learning and encourage open dialogue about personal topics.
- Share wisdom: Create a sense of connection and support by sharing experiences and wisdom from the women who have come before them.
- Celebrate menarche: Frame this natural process as normal, healthy, magical, and a time of embracing feminine power.
This shared experience often provides new insights for the adults as well, as they hear what the children have learned.
Benefits of Attending a First Moon Circle:
Participants leave the circle feeling more confident and empowered, with a greater understanding and acceptance of their bodies and the transformative journey ahead.
The circle creates a safe and normalised space for ongoing conversations about periods and puberty between children and their families.
Attending with friends fosters a sense of sisterhood and provides a shared experience to draw upon for future support.
Parents and caregivers gain valuable tools and language to support their children through this transition.
For many mothers, the circle offers an opportunity to heal their own experiences with menarche and menstruation by providing the support they wish they had received.
