Event description

This training is a closed space for First Nations people only.

Build your confidence and skills in telling your story, speaking up on issues that affect your community and learning how to engage with media such as radio, newspaper and television to shift the narrative and win campaigns for First Nations justice.

The workshop is based on the principles from the Passing the Message Stick, a groundbreaking message research project that has been designed to find the messages that build widespread support for transformative change on First Nations justice and self-determination.

The workshop will be facilitated by Jedda Costa and Tarneen Onus Browne.

Jedda Costa, Senior Media Advisor at the Economic Media Centre. Jedda is a Wemba Wemba, Yorta Yorta and Mutti Mutti woman living on Wurundjeri Country. She has worked as a multi-platform journalist, specialising in Indigenous Affairs at the ABC for the past five years. 

Tarneen Onus Browne is a Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Bindal and Meriam person living on Wurundjeri lands. They are the First Nations Community Organising Lead at Australian Progress and an experienced campaigner and facilitator.

What: Free Media Training Workshop for First Nations advocates and community

Who should come along? This workshop is designed for and by First Nations advocates, activists, leaders and campaigners to use our strength in storytelling to learn more about using the media to campaign for change, in a supportive environment.

What you’ll learn? You’ll learn the practical skills you need to tell your story, speak up on issues that impact your community, engage with journalists, use strong messages and do media interviews. In the workshop you will find out more about:

  • How the media operates and how to get your story into the news
  • How to prepare for and do a great media interview
  • How to use the media to shift conversations and win change
