Thu, 13 Nov, 6pm - 8pm EST

Event description

First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) and The Social Deck are partnering to hold a First Nations online event for the 2025 Review of the Disability Standards for Education. This is on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Education.

This event is for First Nations people and organisations who have an interest in access and participation in education for students with disability. That includes kindergarten, school, Uni and vocational education and training (e.g. TAFE).

What is the event about?

There is an information sheet available about this consultation.

The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards). These need to be reviewed every 5 years.

The Standards help to make sure students with disability can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as students without disability.

They outline what education providers must do to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

How the event will run

The event will be online. It will run via Zoom for 2 hours.

You will have an opportunity to talk about what's working and what needs improvement in relation to access and participation of students with disability in school and higher education.

We might use breakout discussions online to focus on areas relevant to your interest in the review.

Accessibility

When you register, you will be asked to let us know any accessibility supports or needs you have for participating in this event.

Auslan and/or live captioning will be booked on request. Please make sure you notify us when you register if you need Auslan or captioning.

ABOUT THE REVIEW

The review asks whether the Standards are doing their job, and if not, how they can be improved.  You are encouraged to share your thoughts, insights and suggestions on the 3 main topics the review is looking at:

  1. Effective implementation of the Standards: This means how well the Standards are used and followed.

  2. Inclusive decision-making: This means how well students and their families and carers are supported to be involved in decisions.

  3. Clear responsibilities for assessment authorities and course developers: This means having clear guidance so students with disability are able to access and participate in assessments and workplace learning on the same basis as other students.
