First Saturday @ WALKING BOX RANCH - Native Grasses with Laura Cunningham
Walking Box Ranch
Searchlight NV, United States
Event description
Walking Box Ranch is open every first Saturday of the month for a tour of the house and a special guest speaker or activity! Learn more about this special place and Avi Kwa Ame National Monument while also helping to maintain and preserve this historic cattle ranch and desert home of silent film stars Rex Bell & Clara Bow.
Learn about the Mojave Desert’s native grasses with renowned naturalist Laura Cunningham! Having her in the area is a very special treat, so we hope you can join us. Laura is an artist-naturalist who wrote and illustrated the ecological history book A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California, emphasizing native California grasslands, oak woodlands, shrublands, and forests once filled with salmon, antelope, elk, wolves, and grizzlies thriving for thousands of years before European Contact. She has a particular interest in native grasses.
Laura will be leading the hike along the Castle Mountains Grasslands Trail, a prime area for viewing and appreciating the Mojave Desert’s rare native grasses.
We’ll start things off with a tour of the ranch house at 9AM and then caravan over to the trail head for the hike around 10AM.
