Event description

Come and learn about the fascinating world of native freshwater fish conservation with Dr Sylvia Zukowski (Nature Glenelg Trust) and Lachlan Pink (Green Adelaide). This informative event, with hands-on opportunities for the adventurous, invites you to explore what lives beneath the surface of the River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari, and the work being done to restore and protect these delicate aquatic ecosystems.

Some participants will be invited to don waders and help haul in fyke nets to discover and identify the native fish and aquatic species that call this river home. Everyone else will watch on from the river bank - either way, you will learn about the inspiring journey to bring the southern purple-spotted gudgeon back from the brink of extinction, and take part in weaving and placing Vallisneria plant mats to help create better habitat for freshwater fauna.

Whether you're a budding ecologist, a curious citizen scientist, or just love spending time in nature, this immersive event will connect you with the creatures of the Torrens and the efforts to ensure their survival. All ages welcome, and no experience necessary.

Event location:

We will meet by the river Torrens / Karrawirra Pari near Macumba Ave, Lockley's. A map will be sent to participants in the lead up to the event.

What to bring:

  • Waders provided for interested participants (wear enclosed footwear)

  • Hat, sunscreen, water bottle

  • Enthusiasm for native fish and freshwater conservation!
