Fix Club Southville: Half term special!
Event description
Bring along your repair pile AND your kids (7+ years) to our Fix Club Southville half-term special!
This October half term we'll be meeting at the Southville Centre café for a morning of mending and scrap fabric crafts, 10am – 12pm.
Work together with your child to fix your family's wobbly buttons, holey leggings, jeans and t-shirts, mend that Halloween costume ready for trick-or-treating, upcycle your old clothes with colourful scrap fabric patches or make a cute little pumpkin or cat badge,
If you have a child under 7 who would normally happily sit and colour in or practice stitching with a blunt needle, feel free to bring them. We know that no one can guarantee you'll get any fixing done, but you're welcome to try!
Please note: Children must not be left unattended.
We hope you can use this time to craft together, or alongside one another.
Cost
Tickets are £5 per person (adult or child). Adults can bring up to two children each. Please note, you are responsible for them throughout the session.
What is Fix Club?
Fix Club is a regular meet-up for beginner and experienced needle-crafters alike to come together to mend our clothes and household textiles. Our aim is to reduce textile waste while extending the life of our clothes and getting to know each other.
Hole-ridden jeans, ripped shirts and sheets, wobbly buttons, jumpers that have seen better days? They’re all welcome.
You can pick up hints and tips from the more advanced sewists among us, or help those less experienced than you to fix their stuff.
This is a special session for October half term. Find tickets for our regular sessions at BS3 Community Southville Centre and Windmill Hill Community Centre by scrolling to the bottom of the page.
How does it work?
We'll start the session finding out what everyone has brought to fix, and sharing ideas of how to get started (if you need help). If you or your child wants to make a patch or badge, we'll get you set up with everything you need.
We'll spend the rest of the time working on our mends, sharing our tricky fixing problems and solutions, or making something from scrap fabric!
You're welcome to grab drinks and snacks from the cafe throughout the session to have while you mend and craft.
Zero confidence in your sewing abilities?
Beginners are very welcome. We hope that Fix Club will give you the confidence to have a go, make mistakes and try again. Questions and requests for help are encouraged.
Does a teacher lead Fix Club?
Fix Club is an informal learning space with communal problem-solving at its heart. You and your fellow fixers are there to help one another. There’s no official tuition from one designated teacher.
Do you provide equipment and materials?
You’re very welcome to borrow our bits and pieces. We provide scissors, threads, pins and needles and fabric scraps to help you with your mends. If you have your own sewing basket, feel free to bring it along.
What's included in the ticket price?
A small donation to our hosts, BS3 Community, access to our mending equipment, material and books throughout the session.
There is a 'pay what you can' option for anyone who can't afford this additional cost at the moment.
You can also contribute to the price of someone else's ticket by choosing to pay more than the standard ticket price.
On the day
Please arrive as close to the start time as possible. We meet in the café, which is on the left as you go through the main doors of the community centre.
There's a bike park, and free, residential street car parking after 5pm, Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday. The centre's car park is also available after 6pm Monday to Friday and all day Saturday to Sunday.
Finding a car parking spot may be trickier for the Tuesday morning session so if possible, please come by foot, bike, or public transport.
It's a 15 minute walk from Bedminster train station and a 5 minute walk from North Street, served by the no. 24 bus.
