Event description

July 15- August 19 | Six Tuesdays 6:30pm - 9:00pm

This 6 week series will be an opportunity to build a community of practice addressing current events with applied theatre & theatre of the oppressed, and culminating in a community performance activation.

Are you seeking creative strategies for navigating the current landscape? Do you want to connect with creative people in meaningful ways? Do you need an outlet for alllllll of the feeeeeelings? Do you want to bring embodied activities into your work? Or maybe you’re a theatre practitioner who wants to practice and build skills in a community environment?

Throughout history, the arts and artists have been essential in guiding us through difficult and dangerous times like these.

Join Rachael K Sharp in partnership with Theatre Artibus, and The Savoy Denver this summer exploring a range of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) modalities, including games, image, newspaper and forum theatre, and Rainbow of Desire.

All of these forms are rooted in the practice of dialogue, storytelling and improvisation. Rachael’s approach also incorporates Somatic Abolition and applied theatre modalities, staying responsive to the people, place, and power dynamics at play. As TO founder Augusto Boal said,

“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future...”

Applied theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed are the people’s theatre. Each of the first 3 weeks of the series will introduce key tools and methods for the exploration of social issues while igniting our imaginations for liberation. We will spend two weeks devising, crafting, plotting and rehearsing. We will share a culminating performance activation for the final session, opening it to the community for participation and dialogue and partnering with organizations doing the work in the community.

No previous experience necessary.

Registration includes sliding scale rates, you can also reach out to Rachael K Sharp for information about scholarships and work exchange: rachaelksharp@gmail.com
