FLO Friday: Responsible AI Use in the Classroom - Starting Conversations with Students
Event description
In this one-hour Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) Friday workshop, we will explore how educators can start practical, supportive conversations with students about the responsible use of AI in learning. Instead of focusing on bans or fears, this session will offer simple strategies for guiding student thinking, setting clear expectations, and fostering ethical, thoughtful use of generative AI tools.
Participants will leave with examples of starter questions, syllabus language, and classroom activities they can adapt to their own courses — and a more confident approach to discussing AI with students in a positive, open way.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify common concerns and opportunities around student use of AI in learning contexts.
- Explore sample strategies for introducing AI conversations into their own classrooms.
- Draft a simple, adaptable statement or activity to set expectations for responsible AI use.
- Reflect on how to frame AI discussions to encourage academic integrity and student agency.
