Description

Looking for a fun and meaningful school holiday activity for your children?

Join us for an interactive Flood-Ready Treasure Hunt at La Rosa Gardens, where children will explore the local stream, discover the plants and wildlife around it, and learn how our natural environment can help make our communities more flood resilient.

Working in teams, participants will follow clues, complete challenges and solve puzzles as they explore the area.

πŸ” What will we do?

🦎 Follow the journey of tuna (eels) and discover why healthy waterways are important for them.

πŸ’§ Discover our local stream – learn its name and hear the story behind it.

🌱 Explore streamside vegetation and learn how plants can help absorb and slow excess water during heavy rainfall.

🏑 Play the Fence Ranking Challenge – compare different types of fencing and decide which designs allow water to flow more safely during a flood.

πŸ”¬ Become stream scientists – observe the stream's colour, smell and clarity, use a turbidity tube, and look for signs of biodiversity.

🐦 Take part in the Magpie Story Challenge – keep your eyes open along the treasure hunt route and test your observation skills!

πŸ—ΊοΈ Build the Whau Catchment Puzzle and discover what a catchment is and where water from our neighbourhood goes.

πŸ† Find the treasure! Complete the challenges and receive a small treat and sustainable prize at the end.

🌧️ What will children take away?

Through fun, hands-on activities, children will learn:

  • how water moves through our neighbourhood

  • why healthy streams and vegetation matter

  • how our surroundings can influence flooding

  • what a catchment is

  • how we can care for our waterways and help build flood-resilient communities
