Event description
Flos Collective presents Curlew: Live EP - "a work in progress..."
The Event:
We welcome you to Curlew's EP launch of "a work in progress..." a collection of recordings from some of her favourite sharings over the past year.
This special launch will celebrate the creative process, including a debut of new Curlew material, as well as guest appearances from talented step dancer Kae Sakurai; two of Curlew's musician 'challenge' friends, Lola Aluko and Katya Mansell; and a featured exhibition of 'work in progress' artwork of Curlew, by award winning portrait artist Drew Thomson.
About Curlew:
Curlew is the moniker of songwriter and musician Gill Higgins, who shared her witchy alt-folk songs with harmonium and synth drones, and haunting layered vocals for the first time in 2023. Gill Higgins has played as a session musician alongside some of Scotland's finest; Audrey Tait (Franz Ferdinand), Johnny Scott (Chvrches) and Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai); whilst her bands Skinny Dipper (Olive Grove) and CLR theory (BBC Scotland Record of the week, Roddy Hart) have been met with critical acclaim.
The Writing Challenge:
Cultivating her Curlew solo set was the first time Gill had written without a collaborator, and so she set song brief 'challenges' with musician friends. In the spirit of community and learning, Curlew then played these demos live at a scratch night performance in collaboration with Flos Collective in 2023. Come and hear her set in its current iteration, and be part of the journey towards Curlew's anticipated debut album.
"All I'm trying to do is just open people up so they can feel themselves and let themselves be open to somebody else" Nina Simone.
