What could a twist of driftwood become - a dragon, a sculpture or part of a wonderfully wild wreath? This workshop is all about looking at found objects with fresh eyes and discovering their creative potential.
The day begins with an exploratory walk along the Dennes Point coast, gathering inspiration and suitable natural finds. Back at the gallery, Averill will help you experiment with form, balance and relationships between objects as you create a sculpture, assemblage, wreath or abstract artwork.
Perfect for artists, beginners, beachcombers and anyone who loves the sea.
About Averill Lawler
Averill Lawler is a Tasmanian visual artist whose work is shaped by the wild, weather-worn edges of Lutruwita/Tasmania. Growing up beside the Derwent Estuary, she spent her childhood exploring rock pools, watching light move across the water and becoming attuned to the rhythms of sea and sky.
Her work combines close observation with an intuitive sensitivity to texture, atmosphere and Tasmania's luminous coastal light. Averill holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tasmania, where she majored in sculpture, although painting remains her first love.
In her workshops, Averill encourages participants to draw inspiration directly from nature and experiment with materials including graphite, ink, paint and found objects. Her welcoming approach gives newcomers the confidence to have a crack while offering practising artists plenty of room to explore.
