Flying-fox conservation in the Pacific with Malik Oedin
Description
Malik Oedin is a conservation scientist from New Caledonia, specializing in the ecology and management of flying foxes (Pteropus spp.) and hunted species. He holds a PhD in Population Biology and Ecology and has over ten years of experience working at the interface of science, policy, and community-based conservation. Malik currently serves as Head of the West Forest District in Province Nord and is President of Gardiens Des Îles, an NGO focused on inclusive biodiversity conservation, biocultural approaches, and training the next generation of Pacific conservation leaders. His work combines scientific research with local and customary knowledge to develop inclusive approaches to managing culturally significant and hunted species but also Nature based solutions.
This talk explores how conservation efforts in New Caledonia are integrating scientific research with local ecological knowledge and biocultural governance systems to support more inclusive and effective management. Drawing on over a decade of work at the interface of ecology, social sciences, and public policy, Malik will present insights into community-based conservation approaches, the challenges of managing hunted species in a socio-economic crisis context, and opportunities for scaling biocultural conservation strategies across the Pacific.
This months donations will go towards Gardiens Des Îles; a NGO in New Caledonia that focuses on biodiversity conservation and training the next generation of Pacific conservationists.
