The Art and Life of Gray Smith, presented by Shawn Callahan
Description
Friends of CAM invite you to a conversation with Shawn Callahan on Sunday 20 September at 3.30pm at Castlemaine Art Museum.
An award-winning painter and poet, Gray Smith exhibited in Australia, France and England, and had a work acquired by MoMA (New York).
During the 1970s and 1980s, Gray regularly visited Castlemaine to spend time with his son Perry and daughter-in-law Jill. Through them, he became connected with the town’s artistic community. He had earlier been part of the Heide Circle, working alongside artists such as Joy Hester (his first wife), whose work is held by Castlemaine Art Museum.
Join his son-in-law, Shawn Callahan, as he explores Gray’s Castlemaine connections, his place within Australian Modernism, and why his contribution has largely slipped from view.
