Event description

Ku-ring-gai local government area is located 16 kilometres from the city of Sydney (Australia). This urban landscape is renowned for its biodiversity and one which is characterised by a rich blend of natural, built and cultural heritage.

Ku-ring-gai has two critically endangered ecological communities - Sydney Blue Gum High Forest and Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest. They are protected under the New South Wales State Government Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and Australian Government Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. These remnant forests are often described as a 'biodiversity hotspot' and the 'lungs of Sydney'.

World Environment Day celebrates how the Australian conservation movement began in Ku-ring-gai and how this contributed to a global movement calling for the protection of the world's forests, oceans and rivers. Today less than 1% of the Blue Gum High Forest exits in the world and its preservation is an urgent matter of international environmental importance.

Essential: Bring your Opal card to travel on train from Gordon to Roseville Railway Stations.

Wear: Comfortable walking shoes & hat. Bring umbrella.

Optional: Bring your lunch for follow up picnic at Gordon Recreation Park, Werona Avenue, Gordon.
