Building local food communities
Event description
Want to have more of a say about what's on your dinner plate?
Interested in becoming a more active food citizen?
Do you care about gardening, shopping locally, our climate and curious to learn more?
Then join us for this series of three interactive workshops focusing on individual, community and regional action within the food system. Co-hosted by The Food Embassy, Fleurieu Environment Centre and Yankalilla Council, we're excited to be bringing you 3 amazing guest speakers. The sessions will be packed full of informative content, practical skills, and take-home resources for you to use in the workshop and beyond. Plus there will be lots of time to chat and contribute to the conversation.
Through out the series we will be supporting a chat about a locally led food project as there will be mentoring support after the workshop series to support this project to come to life. So bring ideas, thoughts on anything you think will contribute to food resilience and sustainability in your region.
A light snack and drink will be provided.
Be inspired, be challenged but most of all be changed.

She is also a passionate small scale food producer, preserver, home cook, amateur carpenter, gardener and enthusiastic eater during that time. Join us to hear Tara's inspiring story of how she has developed skills and knowledge in her journey of being a mindful food citizen and in particular her handy tips on minimising food waste.
We will also be covering content specific to defining Food Democracy and its attributes.

For the second of three workshops, our special guest is Bill Mansell. Bill is a permaculture practitioner for over 40 years and is also a teacher and runs Habitat solutions. He has lived and worked with remote aboriginal communities with a focus on sustainable community development and biodiversity conservation. And locally he volunteers at the Yankalilla community garden. Bill be sharing his stories of working with communities around how to be an active food citizen and imagining how to build greater local resilience around food systems.
Food Democracy #3: Food Democracy at a Regional Level (Thurs 15 May, 6pm - 8pm)
For the third workshop, our special guest is Sharon McCann
Sharon has chaired the Onkaparinga Food Security Collaborative for the past 6 years. She and the collaborative are passionate about connecting individuals and organisations to ensure a secure food system in our region.
Sharon and the Food Security Collaborative have run a number of initiatives including Food Expos during Covid and Farm Trails to connect locals with the farmers and producers in their local areas. Sharon also made a verbal submission to the Federal Standing Committee on Agriculture’s Inquiry into food security in Australia, as part of the SA Food Systems Network, in conjunction with representatives from Green Adelaide and City of Onkaparinga council. Their submission along with others from SA, urged the Committee to consider a National Food Policy, which was subsequently recommended by the Committee as a National Food Plan.
