Event description

Want to become a more active food citizen? Want to have more of a say in our food system?

Do you care about gardening, shopping locally or our climate and curious to learn more?

Then join us for this series of three interactive workshops focusing on individual, community and regional action within the food system. Co-hosted by The Food Embassy, Second Nature Conservancy and Alexandrina Council, we're excited to be bringing you 3 amazing guest speakers. The sessions will be packed full of informative content, practical skills, and take-home resources for you to use in the workshop and beyond. Plus there will be lots of time to workshop and contribute to the conversation.

Through out the series we will be supporting a chat about a locally led food project as there will be mentoring support after the workshop series to support this project to come to life. So bring ideas, thoughts on anything you think will contribute to food resilience and sustainability in your region.

A light snack and drink will be provided.

Be inspired, be challenged but most of all be changed.

Food Democracy #1: Food Democracy at an Individual Level (Thurs 1 May, 6pm - 8pm)

For the first workshop, our special guest is Tara a local foodie and mother of four who has worked professionally in different roles in the food industry for over 10yrs- working in catering, farmers markets, charcuterie production and vegetable wholesale. She is also a passionate small scale food producer, preserver, home cook, amateur carpenter, gardener and enthusiastic eater during that time. Join us to hear Tara's inspiring story of how she has developed skills and knowledge in her journey of being a mindful food citizen.

We will also be covering content specific to defining Food Democracy and its attributes.

Food Democracy #2: Food Democracy at a Community Level (Thurs 8 May, 6pm - 8pm)

For the second of three workshops, our special guest is Andrew Barker from Grow Free, a program that has expanded throughout Australia.

For the third workshop, our special guest is Linda Enright who has worked in the local government sector for over 15 years. She is currently the Healthy Lifestyle Officer at the City of Onkaparinga. This role supports a wide range of food initiatives promoting health and wellbeing in our community. Linda has had a key role in the SA Food Systems Network group and was involved in a submission and presentation to SA enquiry into Food Security and has played a role in advocating to support a stronger role for local government in this space. She is passionate about building a sense of community and the sharing of stories, skills and knowledge.
