Event description

Food Forests are cultivated intentional forests using edible and useful plants, assembled together to maximize relationship and enhance ecological function. This workshop will provide a primer on Food Forestry in the Pacific Northwest with an experienced instructor and many hands-on examples.  We have some older trees that we are transitioning to a food forest with understory plantings as well as young trees that will benefit from system establishment guilds.  Our curriculum will include design considerations for food forests, tending the soil, plant relationships & guilds, animals in your food forest, pest and disease control, food forest management throughout the year, and more!

If you cannot join us for the full class, you can choose to join for the morning session, focused on an overview of food forest design, soil management, and system establishment, or the afternoon session, focused on building relationships between the plants and animals (both wild and domestic).

Food forests are both climate smart practices and an agroforestry or agroecology technique.  They are a great way to enhance carbon storage in the soil while providing food for your household and community.  Food forests are delightful places to relax and play, inviting for humans and many other species.

Join us to consider how we as humans can integrate natural systems into our cultivation practices to promote good stewardship for the future!
