About: Aotearoa's food waste ecosystem

Aotearoa, New Zealand has a growing and active food waste reduction ecosystem which includes solution providers and enablers for food waste reduction across the food supply chain.  Food waste is a global and local challenge that contributes to climate change, costs us and perpetuates our food insecurity crisis.

New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 is a national and independent charitable organisation that holds a whole-of-system lens on food waste.  We are on a mission to deliver change in food waste through advocacy, action and collaboration with government and across the food system. An area of focus for us as an organisation is to connect the food waste sector to ensure we are all pulling in the same direction to fight food waste.

Why an ecosystem map?

We have developed this as a free resource for our food sector, for funders and food waste solution providers.

New Zealand has over 100 organisations or projects delivering incredible work in this sector and we often aren't able to share learnings, challenges, opportunities and ensure we reduce duplication for more impact. The purpose of this webinar is to offer this as the first draft of what we hope will become an interactive tool that will ensure we are all working together to achieve a resilient, food waste-free Aotearoa.

At this free online webinar you will hear presentations from:

  • Para Kore will open and close the session
  • Ministry for the Environment - Manatū Mō Te Taiao - presenting the Government's current work programmes on food waste reduction including New Zealand's recently developed Food Waste Definition
  • Prime Ministers Chief Science Advisor, Dame Juliet Gerrard - an overview of the latest report in the food waste series (to be released February 2023): Beyond the bin: capturing value from food loss and waste and their upcoming final report on prevention.
  • NZ Food Waste Champions Executive Director, Kaitlin Dawson - presenting the structure, story and delivery of the ecosystem, the organisations and initiatives represented and inviting you to expand on our initial work
  • You! This is an interactive session where we hope to hear your feedback, thoughts and questions about the ecosystem and how we can use this to increase our collective impact
