Food Sovereignty Gathering
Event description
Join the Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET), Degrowth Network Australia (DNA) and the Guerilla Garden for a day to explore food sovereignty and Indigenous solidarity through international and local contexts.
What is food sovereignty?
La Via Campesina defines food sovereignty as the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. It puts the aspirations and needs of those who produce, distribute and consume food at the heart of food systems and policies rather than the demands of markets and corporations. It defends the interests and inclusion of the next generation. It offers a strategy to resist and dismantle the current corporate trade and food regime, and directions for food, farming, pastoral and fisheries systems determined by local producers and users.
This gathering will be an opportunity to learn from international food sovereignty groups such as MST (Landless Rural Workers Movement of Brazil) and La Via Campesina. We will also feature speakers from Australian food sovereignty groups as well as many group discussions to learn more about what we can do here at home to strengthen our local food systems. Speakers to be announced soon!
