Come along to learn why The Lancet medical journal, and other international groups, are calling for a Great Food Transformation towards healthy and sustainable plant-based diets.

Three talented speakers will take you on a journey to learn more about the shifts needed and personal steps we can take towards a better future.

Plant-based Nutrition Expert & GP, Dr Luke Wilson, will outline the huge benefits of a plant-based diet for our health.

Environmental researcher Dr Mike Joy will explore ‘The Future Of Food’ in NZ and how we can move beyond current unsustainable practice.

Former farmer and author of ‘Plant Paradigm’, James Wilson, will discuss wider issues with intensive animal agriculture. He will finish by answering some frequently asked questions expressed by people considering a change to a plant-based lifestyle.

Hannah O’Malley, founder of The Better Base, will MC the event and facilitate a Q&A panel discussion following the presentations.

About Dr Luke Wilson

In 2016 Luke conducted the first whole foods plant-based study of its kind in New Zealand, has completed a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition, and is a Certified Physician with the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

Luke is a member of the New Zealand Medical Association, is a Director and NZ Ambassadoc for health promotion charity Doctors For Nutrition, was New Zealand’s first member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and has experience helping hundreds of people transform their lives by adopting a whole foods plant-based lifestyle.

About Dr Mike Joy

After seeing first-hand the decline in freshwater health in New Zealand, Mike became an outspoken advocate for environmental protection.

Mike has received a number of awards for this work, including an Ecology in Action award from the NZ Ecological Society (2009), an Old Blue from Forest and Bird (2011), a Tertiary Education Union Award of Excellence for Academic Freedom and contribution to Public Education (2013), the Royal Society of New Zealand Charles Fleming Award for protection of the New Zealand environment (triennial, 2013), the Morgan Foundation inaugural River Voice Award (2015), the inaugural New Zealand Universities Critic and Conscience award (biennial, 2016) and was a semi-finalist for the 2018 Kiwibank New Zealander of the year.

Mike has developed bio-assessment tools used by many regional councils and consultants, and has published scientific papers in many fields from artificial intelligence and data mining to the freshwater ecology of sub-Antarctic islands. He has been working for two decades at the interface of science and policy in New Zealand with a goal of strengthening connections between science, policy and real outcomes to address the multiple environmental issues facing New Zealand.

About James Wilson

After a lifetime farming, growing, harvesting and eating meat and milk, a health scare persuaded James Wilson and his wife Barbie to adopt a whole-food plant-based lifestyle (WFPB) in their sixties. They have never looked back.

James has recently published a book, titled ‘Plant Paradigm’. He asserts that a whole-food plant-based lifestyle ensures a longer and healthier life, severely reduces our environmental footprint and avoids the appalling cruelty that livestock farming causes to animals.

‘Plant Paradigm’, while forcibly putting the case for a whole-food plant-based lifestyle, includes practical answers to many of the frequently asked questions expressed by people considering a change to their way of living.

About Hannah O’Malley

Hannah is a clinical pharmacist based in Nelson who works across hospital and community pharmacy. Hannah also has a certificate in plant-based nutrition and founded The Better Base to provide tools and support to help more people eat plant based foods.
