Footscray Smell Walk

Join Erin from Smell Art on a Smell Walk as we explore and record the scents of Footscray. Together, we’ll contribute to a one-of-a-kind Smell Map designed by the incredible Dr. Kate McLean for her upcoming book: An Atlas of Smells, Stinks and Scents. 

From the vibrant scents of the Footscray Market to the aromatic Vietnamese grocery stores and the rich spices wafting from Ethiopian restaurants, Footscray is a sensory treasure trove.

🕥 Time: 3:00 PM – 4:15 PM
📍 Location: Maddern Square, Footscray
🎟 Cost: $10. Children under 18 attend for free

Whether you’re flying solo, coming with friends, or bringing the whole family, everyone’s welcome! Let’s celebrate Footscray’s vibrant smellscape together.

What to Expect:
3 PM: Meet in Maddern Square for a short Smell Walk briefing from Erin. You’ll be given a form and a map to record the scents you encounter.
3:15 PM: Embark on a 45-minute self-guided walk of the surrounding area, recording up to 12 scents that you experience.
4 PM: Gather for a debrief and smell talk, where you’ll learn from Erin about how your sense of smell works, discover some benefits of focusing on smell, and have the opportunity to share your Smell Walk experiences.

What to Bring:

• Pencil/pen and something to lean while you record your notes e.g a clipboard
• A hat and sunscreen
• A water bottle
• Please wear comfortable shoes you can walk in

Access:

• Where you go and the distance you walk is very flexible and self-directed, allowing you to stay within your abilities.
• Verbal and written instructions will be given in English.

• If cost is a barrier, please get in touch.
• This walk is designed for adults 18+ and over. All children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.
• Photography may take place for documentation purposes. You can opt out of being photographed if you prefer.
• The walk will go ahead regardless of weather so dress appropriately.
