Event description

Join us for a special night of food, film and solidarity.  Together, we will raise funds for earthquake relief efforts and stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

  • Wesley Hill Hall,
  • (Good) Friday April 18th
  •  Arrive from 6:00 pm / Dinner at 6:30 pm
  • The film starts at 7:30 pm (70 min)
  • Cost: $25/35 (sliding scale)

The Cause: On March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar. So far, more than 4,000 people have been killed, with many more injured and severe damage to major infrastructure, homes, and services. The impacts of this disaster are compounded by ongoing civil war, mass displacement, restricted healthcare, extreme censorship and an increasing lack of international aid.

"What is turning this natural disaster into a full-blown humanitarian crisis is the actions of the military junta, which seized power in February 2021". - reported by Thin Lei Winn

"People are starving, injured and homeless, and yet they have to go through military checkpoints just to receive help," - reported by Libby Hogan, April 6

All funds raised will go to *Doh Eain, a trusted local network that is using a community network model to get support directly to those in Mandalay and Sagaing who are most affected. (more info about Doh Eain and how they distribute the funds below)

The Film: Myanmar Diaries
An intimate, urgent documentary created by anonymous filmmakers in Myanmar, weaving together powerful stories of life, loss, and resistance under military rule.

More info about the film

The Dinner: I’ll be cooking us a Myanmar-inspired vegetarian curry or soup (TBD on the day). I fell in love with Myanmar food; I miss it. But more than anything, I miss the people who made it. I miss the people I shared it with. Let’s share a meal together and send some love their way.

*Doh Eain is a grassroots urban development organisation that I know personally and who have also been vetted by trusted sources. Following hardship in recent years ( Pandemic, civil war, natural disasters), they have mobilised to develop community-led networks who work together to support people impacted by Covid, coups and now environmental disasters.  They are putting together and distributing emergency packages containing hygiene kits, basic medicines, and canned food as well as utilising their design and construction capabilities to rebuild homes and community space safely & sustainably. You can read more about them on their social media, website, or crowd funding pagewhich you can also donate to directly if you choose.
