Event description

What Is Kelp and Why Is it Vital to People and the Planet?

Do you want to to know more about  production of bio-plastic material out of a seaweed called ‘kelp’?

This workshop will introduce you to the fascinating world of this big brown algae. You will also explore it’s importance for the marine ecosystem, our atmosphere and life on Earth. We will be creating a material with which participants can just let go and be creative with - like in a pottery workshop - making whatever feels right with this mouldable mass.

The workshop does not only open the door to the exciting world of algae and the solutions that it could have for our liveable futures, but also lets the participants take the development of this material further.

Participants will be introduced to the seaweed called kelp. It grows in cold marine waters and builds underwater forests which are recognised as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth.

By familiarising themselves with this seaweed participants can learn about it’s importance for our environment and at the same have an opportunity to be creative with it. To form anything they like with the algae-plastic material we are going to make together.

Participants can get in touch with a being that has been around on this planet for over 20-million years, and at the same time have a recipe for creating a bio-plastic material which could inspire a new perspective for the future where we care for our environment and nurture the bond between human and non-human.

Bio of Facilitator:
