Family Therapy Foundations breaks down the basics of Systemic Family Therapy. This course is ideal for professionals who are interested in implementing systemic understandings and practices into their work.

Topics covered include the history of family therapy and systemic practice, philosophical understandings underpinning systemic practice, the diverse ways of working with families and individuals with a systemic lens and techniques utilised by family therapists. We will discuss case studies and cultural and ethical implications.

Our expert Systemic Family Therapists will guide you to a concrete understanding of the crucial philosophical tenets behind systemic practice and working with families, and you will gain practical techniques to immediately implement to your work with families, individuals or workplaces.

Learning Outcomes:

  1.  Understand and describe what is meant by the terms ‘family therapy’ and ‘systemic practice’.
  2. Have an understanding of the history of family therapy and the central figures in the development of family therapy and systemic practice.
  3. Understand and describe the differences between standard therapy or counselling and use of a systemic approach in these modalities.
  4. Understand and practice using practical tools of Family Therapy such as genograms and dyadic questions.
  5.  Understand and describe the ethical implications of working in an integrative manner in Systemic Family Therapy.
  6. Describe the importance of self-of-therapist, critical reflection and the therapeutic alliance in working with complex systems and multiple individuals.
  7. Describe and understand ethical implications when working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
