WELCOME TO FOUNDER STORIES 2021
Same concept, different year, ongoing lessons.

What is Founder Stories?
The Tank Stream Labs community is home to an incredible knowledge fountain - everyone with their own unique story to tell. Join us every month for a fireside chat with our talented founders and listen in on their startup journey, their story, and the sharing of lessons learned.

This time, we speak with our Perth member Sarah Doyle, Founder, What the Doctor Said chatting to her about:

  • Women in tech and her recent INCITE Awards win for Social Impact
  • how she went from doctor to jazz singer to doctor
  • her Kenneth Myer Innovation Fellowship from the Sidney Myer Fund and The Myer Foundation

THIS WEEK'S FOUNDER

Sarah Doyle, Founder, What the Doctor Said
Dr Sarah Doyle gained her medical degree from the University of Sydney, Australia and spent her first years working as a doctor in the UK. On returning to Australia she worked at Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth which served as the main tertiary paediatric hospital in WA. Sarah’s experiences in the paediatric emergency department (ED) led her to become intensely aware of the challenges around discharge communication with families.

In 2013, Sarah took a career detour to obtain a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance. On return to the world of medicine in 2016, she decided to develop her idea for a web-based tool to improve doctor/patient communication at discharge and called it "What the Doctor Said".

Sarah was awarded an Innovation Fellowship from the Sidney Myer Foundation in 2017 and received further funding in 2019 from the AMP Foundation. This funding and support allowed her to partner with developers and a US-based User Experience expert. Extensive consumer engagement and strong partnerships with clinicians and researchers have also been key to the ongoing development and successful iteration of the system.

In 2020, Sarah was awarded an Innovation Voucher from the West Australian Government to help support and scale the business. What the Doctor Said has recently been named winner of the Social Impact category at the 30th WA Incite Awards.

A bit about What the Doctor Said
What the Doctor Said provides personalised mobile-accessible home care instructions that are clear and easy to read.
Our system helps achieve a more successful and efficient discharge process for patients by adding personalised and written information to verbal instructions to help patients recall and comprehend their discharge plan.
What the Doctor Said was created by doctors who understand the need for software that makes your work easier.
