Overview:
This introductory workshop is designed to reflect on the journey of migration and to deepen understanding of cross-cultural communication within the Aotearoa New Zealand context.
The workshop explores the strengths and challenges associated with adapting to a new environment and introduces established cross-cultural communication frameworks.
Participants will examine topics such as collective and individualistic cultures, hierarchy and relationships, task and relationship-oriented approaches, specific and diffuse cultures, and low and high-context communication styles, providing insight into some of the different communication patterns commonly found across Western and Eastern cultures.
The workshop also highlights the experiences of 1.5 and second-generation migrant New Zealanders and the unique challenges of navigating between their families' cultural values and New Zealand's social norms.
Bringing these themes together, the workshop offers participants practical insights and opportunities for reflection on their own communication styles and assumptions, supporting more effective engagement and culturally responsive practice in diverse settings.
