Free Range 8: Clocked Out, Scott Tinkler, Local Painter, Peyo
Description
Free Range sounds, sunny side up. Our final Thursday night sound club for 2026 – this one's a big fry-up!
Clocked Out: Meanjin/Brisbane legends Vanessa Tomlinson and Erik Griswold have spent over twenty years propagating their visionary post-minimalist sound world, a rhizome of projects with global reach and influence. Restless sonic explorers with toes dipped in composition and improvisation, they draw on experimental sound, jazz, minimalism, and site-based composition. Rhythm and tone masters, these local heroes get their groove on with a bag of acoustic toys and percussion. It's a treat to have Clocked Out back at the IMA.
Scott Tinkler: trumpeter extraordinaire, poly rhythmic maestro, diminished substitution practitioner, sharp-edged pointillist – need we continue? We think so... Based in Castlemaine, Victoria, Captain Tinkler's renown as a trumpeter has grown over a 40 year practice across a multitude of incarnations, as both ensemble player and brilliant soloist. His collaborators read like a veritable roll call of Australian jazz and improvisation luminaries. With an improv trajectory fuelled by jazz and beyond, including non-Western cultures, he is indeed a true Free Ranger!
Local Painter: Kahl Monticone has woven a delicate tapestry of understated guitar work through countless Meanjin/Brisbane bands and solo albums. Joined by ace compadres Eric Liao (guitar) and Liam Eaton (drums), Monticone's volume dial gets a rewire as twin guitars and drums lock in, attaining a Neu! propulsion in a private but noisy conversation. Sporting our new favourite band name, the question remains: are they referring to a neighbourhood water colourist or the person with the tin of Taubmans? You decide.
Peyo: as keen observers of the Meanjin/Brisbane music circuit will attest, scarcely a week goes by that Peyo P isn't hitting the keys in his S Ra/A Coltrane lovin' Cosmos Ensemble or bending strings in neo no-wave trio Mwah. He's here, he's there, he's...at the IMA! His solo piano is a burning energy flow, hypnotic clusters of notes cascading into solid tone blocks. Day into night, may the cold stars rain down. This comet has many orbits left. Catch him now: he's on fire!
Doors at 6pm.
