Dr Eli Kotler and Mind Medicine Australia will share a special presentation on Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies for psychiatrists from a trauma-informed perspective. Dr Kotler is a consultant psychiatrist, holds an academic position at Monash University through the Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, and is the medical director of Malvern Private Hospital, the first addiction hospital in Australia. He is a member of the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD).

Dr Kotler is also one of the 50 students in the first intake of Mind Medicine Australia’s Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (CPAT) with psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, GPs, addiction specialists, social workers, occupational therapists and counsellors.

Nigel Denning and Dr Tra-ill Dowie also will provide an overview of Mind Medicine Australia's Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (CPAT). CPAT is Australia’s first training in psychedelic medicine work. It presents a model of psychotherapy that integrates emergent research and practice literature on brain science and psychedelics/empathogens and links this field with best practice in psychotherapy.

Nigel has developed the CPAT course in conjunction with his colleague Dr Tra-ill Dowie. Nigel is a long term student of and collaborator with Dr Stanislav Grof, one of the pioneers of medicine work and the founder, along with his late wife Christina Grof, of Holotropic Breathwork, an analogue process for medicine work.

This session will share some of the key features of the CPAT course. Nigel will also present a model of practice that provides support and psychoeducation about medicine work for patients, best practice in supporting medicine sessions and a model of integration and ethical treatment termination using a defined treatment term of no more than 20 weeks.

Following the presentation there will be a Q & A Panel with Eli Kotler, Peter Hunt AM, Tania de Jong AM, Nigel Denning and Dr Tra-ill Dowie. They will answer your questions and discuss, the CPAT Course and other support offered, and next steps forward for Australia in this exciting field.

Psychiatrist and Director of Medicine at Malvern Private Hospital

Eli is a consultant psychiatrist, holds an academic position at Monash University through the Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, and is the medical director of Malvern Private Hospital, the first addiction hospital in Australia. He is a member of the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD). Clinically, Eli is interested in the deep connections between trauma and addiction and works within a neuro-psychoanalytic framework. Eli has overseen the development of a clinical program for addictions focused on trauma, particularly developmental trauma. This has led to an interest in medication-assisted trauma therapy. Eli worked for many years researching neurodegenerative diseases and was the principle investigator on numerous trials for novel therapeutics. He is now involved in addiction research involving the retraining of neural pathways underlying incentive salience in methamphetamine addiction. Through involvement with Monash University, Eli overseas the addiction rotation for medical students. He completed the CPAT course as part of the initial cohort.

Nigel Denning

Managing Director of Integrative Psychology

Nigel Denning MA, MPsych is a Counselling Psychologist, AHPRA registered supervisor and Managing Director of Integrative Psychology a Psychology/Psychiatry practice in East Melbourne.  He is a former Family Violence Co-ordinator for Relationships Australia and is currently the Deputy President of the In Good Faith Foundation, an organisation that supports Institutional Abuse and cult survivors. Nigel is also a registered Neuro-psychotherapy supervisor with IAAN.

Nigel has been involved in Transpersonal Psychology and consciousness studies for over thirty years.  He has studied extensively under Stanislav Grof MD and worked closely with Tav Sparks and Grof Transpersonal Training to develop training approaches to Holotropic breathwork and therapy influenced by this modality.  Nigel also conducted one of the few peer reviewed research studies on HB.

Nigel teaches and has presented at numerous national and international conferences on state change technology, including medicine work.  Nigel also has an established practice in Tibet Bon Dzogchen meditation under the guidance of Dr Daniel Brown of Harvard Medical School.

Dr Tra-ill Dowie

Dr Tra-ill Dowie is the Head of the Faculty of Psychotherapy at Ikon Institute Australia. Dr Dowie is the Chair of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) Panel for Trauma Standards & Practice. Dr Dowie is a practising psychotherapist, supervisor and public speaker.

Dr Dowie’s academic life and public lectures cover a broad range of interdisciplinary topics that relate to the human condition: psychiatry, psychotherapy, trauma, continental philosophy, philosophy of mind, anthropology, health and wellbeing, and human optimisation.

He holds dual PhDs, receiving a PhD in Psychiatry from Monash University and a
PhD in Philosophy from the University of Melbourne.

Peter Hunt AM

As an investment banker Peter Hunt AM advised local and multi-national companies and governments in Australia for nearly 35 years. He co-founded and was Executive Chairman of one of Australia’s leading investment banking advisory firms, Caliburn Partnership (now called Greenhill Australia) and continued as Chairman of the Firm after its sale to Greenhill Inc in 2009. Peter is an active philanthropist involved in funding, developing and scaling social sector organisations which seek to create a better and fairer world.
