Freedom Rain Speaks: Free Poetry Workshops with Malaya Ulan
Event description
Come celebrate Poetry Month with Philadelphia's Youth Poet Laureate Malaya Ulan! Malaya is hosting two poetry workshops at Studio 34 on March 19 and April 2 leading up to a performance of her daughter-mother show Freedom Rain Speaks as part of Philly Theatre Week.
These poetry workshops are open to youth and adults, especially to folx who are shy about writing. Willing participants will have a chance to perform their poetry (or not!) at Freedom Rain Speaks, a poetry-performance and mother-daughter project between Malaya and her multidisciplinary mother, artist Ani Gavino that;s being staged here as part of Philly Theatre Week.
In Freedom Rain Speaks, they merge dance, text, music, and writing modalities such as the epic poem writing and the Sarswela used in Philippine Theater.
These workshops are free and run from 6:00–7:00 PM on Wednesdays, March 19 and April 2. Anyone is welcome to come to one or both workshops.
Freedom Rain Speaks has two performances, both on April 12, at 5:30 and 8:30 PM. Click here for more info.
This project is part of the Blade and Barrel project supported by the Paul Robeson West Philadelphia Creative Arts Grant. Join us with activating poetry and somatic movement as our blade.
