A night of listening, conversation and collective broadcasting

Join us after hours as Radio Climate expands beyond the EMERGENCE[Y] exhibition for a night of listening, conversation and collective broadcasting.

In collaboration with Creative Climate, Science Gallery Melbourne transforms into a live radio ecology, featuring a communal listening party, a performance lecture by artist and researcher Casey Rice, and live DJ sets.

Explore the exhibition, contribute your own thoughts to the Radio Climate archive, and settle in with food, drinks and good company.

Tune in, listen closely, and discover how sound can connect communities, environments and climate stories across distance and time.

This event will be live broadcast on 3CR.

A pre-event Submerged Listening Walk will also be led by sound artist Geoff Robinson. Spaces are limited, book your spot here.

---

Science Gallery Melbourne’s Friday Night Socials are free parties where you can explore the latest exhibition along with additional one-night-only programming and live DJ sets. Food and drinks are available for purchase.

The new exhibition EMERGENCE[Y] explores adaptation, innovation and resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Creative Climate is the national peak body for arts and climate, supporting artists and organisations to work towards climate-aligned cultural transformation.

    Pre-event: Submerged Listening Walk

Sound artist, Geoff Robinson, will take audiences on a guided listening walk tracing the submerged creek flowing under Melbourne University on Wurundjeri Woi wurrung Country. Listening to the creek through drain grills we will follow the flow of the creek downstream from University Oval to Bouverie street. We will engage acoustic and microphone listening to attune to the waters flow and ecologies, speculating the cycles of eel migrations that continue their journey to and from the Birrarung and beyond. Spaces are limited, booking is required.

  • 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

    Collective Listening Room

In the collective listening room, you can hear all the audio works from Radio Climate together. take your shoes off grab a cup of tea take a breath lie down and listen The works in Radio Climate are made by Daniel Browning and Aunty Vicki Couzens, Miyuki Jokiranta, Aunty Angela ten Buuren, Isobel Morphy-Walsh, Sammy Trist and The Orbweavers, Geoff Robinson, Amias Hanley, Mara Schwerdtfeger and Hayden Ryan, Jasmine Griffiths and A Climate For Art.

  • 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Ambient Soundscape Performance by Hayden Ryan

Hayden’s ambient soundscape performance weaves modular synthesis with field recordings. This work observes the ecotones that emerge between harmony and dissonance, natural and synthesised, noise and resonance - testing the threshold at which these sonic polarities share a voice.

  • 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

    Performance Lecture by Casey Rice

When the phone network goes down, radio doesn’t. CB and UHF radio, and now mesh networking tech like MeshCore and Meshtastic, all sit on the same kind of resource: open, licence-free spectrum, usable by anyone at low cost, running on low-power hardware with no reliance on paid business models or carrier infrastructure. This talk looks at that lineage — from CB through to mesh radio — as a continuous line of publicly available communications infrastructure, and at how that bandwidth works as a shared, low-cost resource in practice.

  • 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

    DJ set by General Vibes

General Vibes (The Fabric, Astrophony – 3RRR FM) weaves sweaty warmth and cool changes to bring you all the textural delights of Island living, right here on the dancefloor. Bringing beats to kick back to, this one is for those who like to slow dance or wile out simultaneously.
