Friends of the Wooditjup Bilya - Upskilling for impact
Event description
"More and more locals are getting on board becoming important custodians of this river. They are starting to look on their properties, and beyond their boundaries and are empowered to act as custodians of the Wooditjup Bilya (Margaret River).
At this session, locals can learn the key weed species which threaten the biodiversity of the Wooditjup Bilya.
Learn how to identify them, map them and what we can do to control them to protect our river."
- Lauren Scanlon, Friends of Wooditjup Bilya Officer
The Friends of Wooditjup Bilya (Margaret River) April program will feature guest presenter Obelia Walker.
A landscape designer and environmental scientist, Obelia has spent the past 10 years or so in the southwest where she has developed a deep love and appreciation for the rich flora of this place. From research to ecotourism to plant nurseries and productive gardens, Obelia is fascinated by plants and delights in sharing this enthusiasm with others.
And of course... to protect the incredible flora of this fabulous place we call home, we must be able to identify, know and do our bit to eradicate the invasive weeds that crowd out our endemic plants and threaten our biodiversity.
Learn how :
- To identify high priority weed species found along the Wooditjup Bilya (including Sydney golden wattle, Flinders range wattle, olive, blackberry, polygala, etc).
- To install the Fieldbook app onto your device.
- To troubleshoot any technical issues.
- To use the Fieldbook app to submit weed data directly to Nature Conservation Margaret River Region.
- The data is then used for priority setting and monitoring in the region.
Maps will be generated by NCMRR using the data gathered by FWB on the day and promptly shared back with the group.
We'll learn the knowledge gaps and find out where to from here - which priority areas we don't yet have weed mapping data for (and need help collecting!)
