Frogs of the Darebin Creek

Join us to explore the diversity and unique ecology of frogs in the Darebin Creek valley.

Led by frog expert David De Angelis, we’ll take a walk through the wetlands to listen for local frog species.

• Listen to a range of recorded frog calls and learn about the key characteristics used to identify species commonly found in the area, including threatened native frogs and those introduced through human activity.

• Become more familiar with recording frog calls, with a focus on species found in the area, including the threatened Growling Grass Frog and introduced species like the Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog.

• We'll also practice recording their calls as part of Victoria’s Frog Census, a citizen science program coordinated by Melbourne Water.

David works as an environmental educator and consultant, having particular interests in the identification, conservation and ecology of frogs. He is the current president of Frogs Victoria, and maintains involvement in surveying and monitoring for frogs through La Trobe University, Holmesglen Institute and The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria.

This event will take place at our Wollert site in the north of the catchment. We have been conducting restoration activities and monitoring with the community at this site. We will be looking at an ephemeral soak where the endangered Growling Grass Frog has been recorded previously.  

Please bring a torch, water bottle, wear sturdy footwear (gumboots preferable), and be prepared for field conditions.
