From Incident to Insights: Key Privacy Lessons for Charities

Please join the Australian Privacy Commissioner and Oxfam Australia as they reflect on a data incident experienced by Oxfam and the lessons it offers for charities.

Chaired by CLAANZ, this webinar will discuss charities' privacy obligations, the regulatory role of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), and the practical steps taken by Oxfam to strengthen its privacy practices. The discussion will explore how charities can foster a culture of privacy, to protect their organisations’ data and the personal information entrusted to them. 

About the speakers

Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind

Carly Kind commenced as Australia’s Privacy Commissioner in February 2024 for a 5-year term. As Privacy Commissioner, she regulates the handling of personal information by entities covered by the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and seeks to influence the development of legislation and advance privacy protections for Australians. Ms Kind was previously the inaugural director of the UK-based Ada Lovelace Institute, a research institute focussed on the ethical and societal impacts of data and AI. She has worked with the European Commission, the Council of Europe, numerous UN bodies and a range of civil society organisations. Ms Kind has a Masters of Science, International Relations (Hons) from the London School of Economics, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and a Bachelor of Arts (International Relations) (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland.

Carla Williams, General Counsel, Oxfam Australia

Carla Williams is General Counsel at Oxfam Australia, and has worked in the Oxfam legal team since 2021. Carla has extensive experience managing large scale litigation and regulatory proceedings and was previously a Senior Associate at Johnson Winter Slattery (JWS) in the dispute resolution team in Sydney. Before joining JWS, Carla worked in a number of international public law roles, including advising the Government of Timor-Leste on the Timor-Leste vs. Australia arbitral proceedings in the Hague, and in the public law litigation team at the Treasury Solicitor's Department in London, advising on asylum and refugee related judicial review applications. Carla also worked as the Research Assistant and Associate to Chief Justice Higgins at the ACT Supreme Court.  Carla has a Master of International Law, a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of International Relations.  

Rachele Hass, Executive Lead – Supporter Activation, Oxfam Australia

Rachele Hass is an experienced marketing and fundraising leader with more than 20 years' experience in the not-for-profit sector. Throughout her career, she has worked across a diverse range of organisations and causes, including health charities, disability inclusion, and international aid and development. For the past decade, Rachele has held senior leadership roles at Oxfam Australia, driving marketing and fundraising strategies that strengthen supporter engagement and deliver sustainable growth.
