From Policy to Practice: AI Guidelines in Aged Care

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into aged care, providers face a critical challenge: adopting AI safely, ethically, and effectively.

This session offers a structured approach to AI adoption tailored to the realities of aged care organisations. You will learn how to assess readiness, engage stakeholders, and align AI use with the Strengthened Aged Care Standards.

All participants will receive a customisable AI Guidelines Template and a step-by-step implementation guide to support internal rollout, policy development, and ongoing review.

Why This Matters

A major global study by KPMG and the University of Melbourne found that 58% of employees use AI intentionally at work and they report increase efficiency, innovation and work quality. However, almost half of them admitted they use AI in ways that could be considered inappropriate (47%) and even more (63%) have seen other employees using AI inappropriately. Also, the survey found that complacent use of AI is also widespread, with 66% of respondents saying they have relied on AI output without evaluating it. It is unsurprising then that a majority (56%) have made mistakes in their work due to AI. (Source: The Conversation, April 2025).

These findings highlight the urgent need for clear, accessible guidelines that support safe and responsible AI use in aged care.

Presenter

George Gouzounis is Chair of the AI Adoption in Aged Care Workgroup and founder of AgeFriendly.AI. He leads national initiatives on AI capability building and sector readiness and has developed AI Guidelines for a number of aged care and community organisations. George is also the Aged Care Sector Support Coordinator at the Multicultural Communities Council of SA, and an accredited trainer.

About the AI Adoption Workgroup

The AI Adoption in Aged Care Workgroup is a national initiative, established to support responsible and effective integration of AI and technology across the aged care sector. The workgroup brings together AI specialists, aged care providers, and policy stakeholders to co-design practical tools and resources, and policy guidance. Its focus is on sector-wide capability building, operational improvement, and ensuring AI adoption aligns with regulatory requirements and care quality standards.
