Description

Publishing in prestigious international journals can be one of the most rewarding milestones of a research career. This seminar offers postgraduate students a unique opportunity to learn how high-quality scientific papers are developed, evaluated, and ultimately published. Participants will gain practical insights into the expectations of journal editors and reviewers, with a particular focus on improving manuscript quality and publication success.

This seminar will explore:

  • How to approach submissions to world-leading journals, including Nature and Science

  • The history and influence of these flagship scientific publications

  • Essential principles for writing clear, rigorous, and impactful SCI papers

  • What editors look for and how to improve the chances of your manuscript reaching peer review

  • Ethical responsibilities in research publishing, including plagiarism, authorship, and the emerging role of artificial intelligence.

The seminar will be presented by Professor Alistair Borthwick, Emeritus Professor of Applied Hydrodynamics at The University of Edinburgh and UWA Institute of Advance Studies Visiting Fellow. The session will include discussion with UWA academic staff to give a local context, as well as a Q&A and discussion with participants.
