    Event description

    Get ready to level up!

Ever wanted to make a game but lacked the time and motivation and didn't know all the skills? The "Level Her Up: We Can Build It!" game jam is for you!

This beginner-friendly event will take place in person (Murdoch University, Perth) and online (via Discord) on November 9th and 10th. All 18+ women and non-binary individuals across Australia who are interested in hands-on game development practice are encouraged to attend, regardless of experience level or background! If you're participating in person, you need to bring your own laptop (and charger!) if you're making a digital game. Board and card games are also welcome!

At the game jam, you will form a team with other like-minded women to collaboratively design and develop a small game based on a proposed theme over the course of the weekend. Experienced game development mentors will be available on both days to answer questions. Games created during the game jam will be showcased at the end of the game jam and at upcoming events!

    FAQs

Q1. What can I expect from the game jam?

A game jam is a creative marathon where you will create a game in a weekend. Game jams offer you a chance to push your creativity and practice skills in game development. We will help you find a group and set a theme for everyone to interpret in their own way. For example, last years theme was ‘Connection’.

Our game jam is beginner-friendly, catering to individuals with no prior experience (aside from basic computer skills).

    Q2. Who is welcome?

Our focus is reaching out to women and underrepresented individuals aged 18 years and above, who might have been discouraged from pursuing their interests in gaming and game development due to societal stereotypes and cultural obstacles in previous generations.

We recognize the increasing popularity of gaming and game development, particularly among younger generations, and believe in ensuring equal opportunities for all women to get involved in these domains.

As such, our event attendance is open to women (cis and trans) and nonbinary people aged 18 years and above. In the future we may look at expanding this audience.

Q3. Can I join the game jam online?

Yes, you can. Make sure you select the ONLINE ticket option at check out. We will provide more instructions closer to the date.

Q4. Do I need to be experienced at game development?

People of all experience levels are welcome at this game jam. Our game jam is designed to be beginner friendly; we have a team of mentors on hand to help you throughout the event.

We believe that game development can benefit greatly from people with different perspectives and backgrounds. All you need is creativity and determination (and basic computer skills)!

Q5. What do I need for the workshop?

We recommend you bring whatever tools you need to make a game. We strongly recommend you bring:

    • a laptop and charger (don't forget to bring your charger)
    • headphones
    • any software you may need installed before the event

We will provide a list of recommended software closer to the day.

This is a pen-and-paper-friendly event! Card and board games are welcome.

Q6. How can I contact Level Her Up team with any questions?
