YO! My name is Tahnee Edwards, I’m a proud Yorta Yorta and Taungurung woman, designer and community worker. Gammin threads is my side hustle and creative outlet from my part-time job at Aboriginal family violence prevention service, Djirra. 

Gammin threads is a love letter to my culture and to Blak fullas everywhere. It’s a staunch Aunty label that likes good design and being cheeky.

"I felt super inspired to create some designs around my love and admiration for Aboriginal women, the women in our community holding it down and getting sh*t done with very little support," Tahnee explains.

"Working at Djirra taught me that gendered violence ultimately stems from disrespect (along with the violent invasion and colonisation of this country).

"And so I created some designs about respecting the Blak matriarchy and Blak women."

Edwards poured all her ideas into an A5 notebook before experimenting with colour and typeface in Illustrator. The result was her first batch of graphic T-shirts and crew-necks. 

The positive response from her community made her realise she had potentially started something big.

Edwards named her label Gammin Threads after her "favourite Blakfulla word", which she takes to mean fake, inauthentic, crap or a way of saying "only joking".

Fast forward six years and that same brand has been recognised by the National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFAs).

Edwards is one of six First Nations designers up for the fashion designer award at the prestigious event, which is held on Larrakia Country in Darwin and supported by the Northern Territory Government.

The NIFAs, which have been running since 2020, are part of the Indigenous Fashion Projects (IFP), a week of events that also include the Country to Couture runway (at which Edwards's designs will feature) and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair.

Gammin Threads is a nationally recognised First Nations brand, beloved by Mob, and Ally's. Gammin Threads serves as a heartfelt tribute to First Nations people across Australia, inspiring Mob to unapologetically take up space - be seen, heard and feel LUBLY doing it!
