This year's Gathering of Kindness events are proudly supported by Central Gippsland Health Services, St Vincent's Health Australia, the Rotary Action Group for Family Safety, and Trauma Recovery Network Australia. 

Session 1: Kindness in practice, in policy, and within a pandemic

Featuring renowned social researcher, Simon Anderson (Scotland) 

About the session

The pandemic has provided countless examples of how small acts of everyday support can help to render life 'liveable' for many in our community. Politicians, meanwhile, have urged us all to check in on neighbours and practice 'random acts of kindness'. 

Reflecting on his prominent qualitative research into the infrastructure of kindness, and subsequent conceptual work, social research expert Simon Anderson will explore these themes, as he takes us through the implications of kindness in practice, in policy and within a pandemic.

This session will include an interactive Q&A.  

About Simon

Simon is a sociologist and applied social researcher, based in Scotland. Together with Dr Julie Brownlie, he has been exploring the issue of kindness for several years, both conceptually and empirically. 

From 2003 until 2014, Simon was director of the Scottish Centre for Social Research (ScotCen) and has also worked in academia, central government and the private sector. For the past 6 years, he has been an independent research consultant. He is also an Honorary Fellow in the School of Social and Political Science at Edinburgh University.

Join internationally renowned speaker Dr Chris Turner, as he explores the notion of wisdom, different styles of leadership, while also reflecting on the work of the Civility Saves Lives movement.

This session will include an interactive Q&A.  

About Chris

Founder of the Civility Saves Lives movement - which is led by healthcare professionals aiming to raise awareness of the power of civility in medicine - Dr Chris Turner is also a consultant in emergency medicine, working in UHCW, a major trauma centre in the West Midlands.

Resilience. A word thrown around a lot right now, but what does it really mean? And who’s responsible for our resilience in the healthcare setting?

Hear from an expert panel as together they consider the role that individuals, teams and organisations all play in the building of resilience – especially during a time like Covid, and beyond.
