Event description

Diaspora Arts Connection proudly presents Gelareh Sheibani Live at Central Stage on Saturday, May 3rd at 7:30 PM. Join us in welcoming back Gelareh to the Bay Area as she performs songs from her previous and new albums, accompanied by Safa Darman (guitar), Mohammad Shabani (percussion), Rymand Entezari (keyboard), Daniele DeCario (bass), Dave Hadad (drums).

About the artist:

Born in Iran, Gelareh Sheibani found the passion of music at a very early age, when she started taking keyboard lessons. Gelareh’s love for singing began as a teenager in Iran, where solo singing for women was not allowed. Gelareh and her other musician friends started an underground band whose only public performances were made in churches and embassies.

In 2013, Gelareh released her first music video for the song “Nagoo Tanhaei,” which was made with the help of a girlfriend who directed the video. She recorded her second single and made another music video, but was summoned by police for her musical activities. She was arrested and prosecuted for making the music videos and had to promise not to engage in music anymore as a condition to end the judicial case against her. Gelareh moved to China, where her sister lived at the time, and began singing again by performing pop and jazz songs. She then moved to Malaysia, where she released two more songs and music videos. After her family was questioned about her musical activities outside Iran, Gelareh never returned to Iran. She lives in the US now, where she has performed at various music festivals and events, including Diaspora Arts Connection's "Let Her Sing."
