    Event description

Dive into history with Gems of the Collection at the Australian National Surfing Museum!

Join us as we explore the captivating journey of the museum’s iconic Hawaiian surfboards making their way to Australia.

    When: 23 June @ 2pm

In 1920, the shores of Lorne, Victoria, witnessed a historic moment as Hawaiian redwood surfboards rode its waves, igniting the state’s passion for surfing. These surfboards, purchased by Geelong local Louis Whyte from Duke Kahanamoku in Hawaii, embarked on a transoceanic adventure, forever altering the Victorian surfing landscape.

How did these surfboards find their home, over 100 years later, in the Australian National Surfing Museum? Unravel the tale with our speakers, Museum Collections Officer Marie Van Der Klooster and Surfboard Shaper Michael "Vanda" Van Der Klooster. Explore the significance of these iconic boards, their cultural impact, and the craftsmanship behind them.

Join us for a relaxed conversation, where you're invited to participate and pose your questions. Don't miss this unique opportunity to connect with surfing history and immerse yourself in the legacy of these remarkable surfboards. Secure your spot now and be a part of this unforgettable experience!
