GeographyWA Symposium 'Geography and Communities'
Description
Hi Everyone,
Following the success of the inaugural GeographyWA Symposium last year at UWA, we are excited to welcome you to the second annual GeographyWA Symposium, this year hosted by Curtin. This year, our symposium theme is Geography and Communities, offering the opportunity for WA Geographers to share and engage with research undertaken with and impacting communities. See more on our theme below.
The event aims to continue to strengthen connections among and between WA-based geography scholars and practitioners, fostering collaboration and to promote an awareness of the scope of geography related research happening across the state. This symposium also provides perfect opportunities for networking and connection amongst our disciplines, departments and research areas.
The symposium is free to attend, however registration is essential. Morning tea, lunch and refreshments are provided through the day, with an additional opportunity for networking following the main symposium.
Symposium Theme: Geography and Communities: Relationships, Movements, Futures
Geographers working across a breadth of research areas play an important role in building, understanding, and collaborating with diverse communities across a variety of contexts. A key geography perspective and skillset is in building strong relationships with community collaborators and understanding their relationships with place, space and environments. This includes new approaches with non-human communities and how technologies influence communal networks. Environmental and physical geography research often addresses the relationships between Earth systems and communities including how to improve understandings and biophysical-social processes.
This symposium offers the opportunity for WA Geographers to share research undertaken with and impacting communities. We are interested in hearing about a wide variety of methods and research approaches and research areas including but not limited to social and environmental justice, collaboration, movements, impact, engagement, conflicts and futures. It includes research with place-based communities, non-human communities, diasporic communities, ‘imagined’ national communities, and communities of interest that are distributed nationally and internationally. We welcome lively approaches that explore new methods and open up new geographical fields for analysis and discussion.
In August, we will call for expressions of interest for paper presentations for the symposium.
This event is brought to you by Curtin University and GeographyWA.
For any questions, please get in contact with Connor Goddard and Tod Jones via this email: geography@curtin.edu.au
We look forward to welcoming you to the symposium in November.
Kind regards,
Curtin Geography and GeographyWA
