Ten Years of Astrobiology: Geothermal Field Trip for Primary Teachers
Event description
Location: Ōrākei Kōrako & Wai-O-Tapu, Taupō Volcanic Zone
Join us in the heart of the Taupō Volcanic Zone for a full-day, immersive field trip designed specifically for primary teachers and educators interested in space science, sustainability, and place-based, interdisciplinary learning.
This special event celebrates a decade of astrobiology in Aotearoa New Zealand, a field that explores life in the Universe and our place within it. Astrobiology draws together geology, biology, astronomy, ethics, and culture, offering exciting ways to enrich classroom learning across subjects.
We’ll explore two of New Zealand’s most stunning geothermal landscapes: Ōrākei Kōrako and Wai-O-Tapu with expert guides:
Barbara Lyon (University of Auckland), geochemist and astrobiology educator
Dr. Mitch Schulte (NASA Headquarters), Mars Program Scientist and astrobiology leader
Together, we’ll investigate how these unique sites mirror early Earth conditions and environments we search for on Mars and beyond.
Teachers will gain:
Curriculum-linked ideas for teaching science, sustainability, and Earth systems
Engaging resources to bring astrobiology into the classroom
Connection to the national Spaceward Bound NZ programme
Early access to the new travelling astrobiology exhibition (launching in 2025)
Whether you’re passion is teaching science, social studies, literacy, or environmental education, this field trip offers a rich, interdisciplinary experience grounded in local landscapes with global relevance.
This event is made possible with generous support from the U.S. Embassy in New Zealand, under the 150 Years of U.S.–New Zealand Scientific Collaboration Small Grants Program, celebrating a century and a half of joint discovery between our nations.
Special thanks to our partners and supporters for enabling this unique opportunity for educators.
