The GEPS and Griffith Combined Schools Band welcomes any student from years 3-12 with all levels of musical skill. Our current band has approximately 60 members, across three ensembles; the GEPS Training Band, the GEPS Performance Band and the Griffith Combined Schools Band. The three ensembles currently include students in years 3-10 from multiple local primary and secondary schools. The band offers students the opportunity for mentorship, to experience music in an orchestral setting and to build friendships with likeminded peers. The Griffith Combined Schools Band is endorsed by Griffith East Public School (GEPS) and led by GEPS music teacher, Mr Rhys Thomas.
Being a member of a band teaches children teamwork, develops communication skills, aids problem solving skills, encourages listening, the ability to follow verbal and non-verbal cues, supports efficient brain processing, supports cognitive development and gives children a sense of belonging.
Each year, the GEPS and Griffith Combined Schools Bands compete at the Australian School Bands Festival in Sydney; including competing against several affluent schools with high calibre music programmes. In the past, the students have been tremendously proud to earn gold and silver trophies, which is a fantastic result for our regional community. The children are excited to compete again this year.
The 2025 Australian School Band Festival will be held in Sydney in September. The students are fundraising to help cover the costs of entering the competition, travel and accommodation for two nights. They need a total of $15,000.
As we want the band and these experiences to be accessible for all children, we endeavour to keep excursion costs to a minimum. Due to our regional location, access to events such as this are limited and costly. Ensuring all students have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their situation, is an extremely valuable way to support their musical development and confidence.
