Description

All Saints' College and Dymocks are pleased to present Geraldine Mellet in Conversation with Michelle Johnston on Tuesday 17 November, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm in the Upper Theatre at All Saints' College.

Join Geraldine Mellet, as she sits down with Dr Michelle Johnston to discuss her new book Fifty Beating Wonders.

Set against the backdrop of a bustling emergency department, Fifty Beating Wonders explores the remarkable complexity of the human body through the eyes of an emergency physician with more than thirty-five years of experience. Blending medicine, memoir and storytelling, Johnston takes readers behind the doors of an inner-city hospital to reveal the awe, wonder and resilience found within both the human body and the people who care for it.

Through one unforgettable shift and a catastrophic motorcycle accident, the book examines what happens when our bodies fail, while celebrating the extraordinary systems that keep us alive. Thought-provoking, moving and deeply human, Fifty Beating Wonders is a reflection on medicine, hope, inequity, connection and the enduring question at the heart of us all: what makes us human?

Comparable to acclaimed works such as When Breath Becomes Air, Being Mortal and The Emperor of All Maladies, Fifty Beating Wonders is an uplifting and insightful exploration of the miracle of being human.

About the Author

  • Dr Michelle Johnston

    Dr Michelle Johnston

Is a consultant Emergency Physician who works at an inner city hospital. Mostly her days consist of trauma and mess. Also, she writes. She studied medicine at UWA, and gained her Fellowship with the Australian College for Emergency Medicine in 1998. She loves caring for patients and teaching, but is terminally confused by health bureaucracy and is an expert in meeting avoidance. She believes there is a beating heart of humanity, art, and beauty within the sometimes brutal reality of the Emergency Department, and she has dedicated her career to finding that sweet spot between creativity and critical care medicine. Books are her other oxygen, and writing her sustenance.
