Get Online ... with a Screen Reader
Event description
Vision impairments shouldn't stop people getting online. Software called screen readers can read out the content on websites and apps - but how do they actually work?
Get Online - with a Screen Reader is a FREE one-hour webinar hosted by OZeWAI that demonstrates how a screen reader can be used by blind people and people with low vision to navigate websites and apps.
In this session for the annual Get Online Week, Scott Nixon demonstrates how to use the VoiceOver screen reader built into all iPhones to read out what's on a sample of websites. Scott sets out to show how screen readers can help to make the web accessible to people with vision impairment - and inevitably also shows how not all websites are as accessible to screen readers as they should be.
The platform we use provides a chat feature that attendees are invited to use to submit questions about the presentation, screen readers and accessibility. We've set some time at the end to answer as many as we can.
Get Online Week is an international digital inclusion campaign organised by Good Things Foundation. Beginning in the UK in 2007 and introduced to Australia in 2018, Get Online Week is a week-long annual celebration that sees thousands of events take place each year giving everyone the chance to find the support they need to improve their digital skills.
